Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
